The Team Submits its Plan...

In January of 2020 Governor Dunleavy's office asked Kerry Williams to provide a white paper describing the concept of a 100% renewable grid based around pumped hydroelectric energy storage (aka Pumped Energy Storage, or PES). This report is what he and his collaborators produced, providing details of the system, and a comparison to the Susitna-Watana hydropower project. The specific scenario described here involves six wind farms spread across the railbelt electric grid, balanced by three PES facilities, the largest at Eklutna, plus two others in the distal sections of the grid managed by Golden Valley Electric Association and Homer Electric Association. The total cost is less than the cost of Susitna, and provides more electricity, as well as other benefits.
